Thanks, Jeff!  This is actually the first edition; the other day Darlene changed the cover.  Currently, she's working on the individual chapters as PDF files, which I'm editing.  Eventually, she'll put them all together in one long PDF file for sale.  Of course, nobody's been buying the first edition because we've been stupidly making all the info available for free on the website, so she's now removing some of the info there and putting it exclusively into the PDF version.  Some day I hope to approach publishers.  It's more than just a tourist guide, though; we have photo tips throughout on composition, HDR processing, and the like.  It's a fun project--stimulating, fulfilling.

That is so cool!  If you would ever need or want any web tips (I am a developer/designer/SEO guy at my non-photography job) or techie camera tips, I'd be happy to help!

Also, I do happen to know a small-time book publisher here in Michigan.  This may be something they would be interested in, if you'd like me to throw it across them?

I did look at the website (lots of beautiful work there, and great info), and tried to find where I could buy the PDF, but didn't really see any obvious call to action regarding buying the book (which I intend to do).   Maybe after your updates, simply offer one small chapter as a sample, and then make them buy to get the rest. :)

I sent your note to Darlene and she wrote me a quick reply on her phone, very much along the line of what I told you:

Website states under construction atm and with regards to the PDF it also says that 2nd edition is in the works...no point selling the old one since the website has so many more editions etc. The link used to be there for the 1st edition which linked to purchase..I since removed it. When the 1st edition was avail I had a video of sample pages and images with boom features...so yah we're on the same page. Maybe you could mention that I'm revamping everything. What I was thinking this time around is whenever we add a new location to the website, the PDF is updated....so all locations will always be in the current PDF. Once the PDF is done it's not a big deal to keep adding I figure. Send him my thanks of course for his thoughts. The publisher thing might be something of interest too.

Ahh! That would explain why I couldn't find it :)  I'll keep my eyes open for 2.0!  The integration of the site relative to book releases is a good idea.

It's an open offer, so if you ever need to pick a brain, I'll be happy to be picked lol.

If you'd ever like me to get in touch with the publisher, just say the word, I'll get you in touch!

thanks, Jeff!  We may indeed take you up on the publisher.  We have one or two Canadian publishers in mind; the downside is, they've already published similar books--several by this guy Jim Brown, who has done many books on Ontario locations.  His photography is lousy, though, and he's more about locations than photo-art anyway.  So our plan is to combine info on locations, superior photos, and photography tips.  Another guy, Mark Harris, has a book on Ontario waterfalls, so both Jim and Mark have "beat us to the punch" (or whatever the silly expression is).  Mark brings his expertise on geology to his project--and, again, some of the photography isn't great (as he himself admitted to Darlene).  Still, these publishers may hesitate to do something not unlike what they've already done, and they may not want to provide competition to their own authors.  A publisher in Michigan, on the other hand, might see a ready-made audience in those Americans near the border who can easily pop over to Ontario.

We'll let you know.  It may be a few months yet, and right now, I have dozens of essays and tests to grade, so these will keep me tied up for a few weeks yet.

Cheers!

thanks for the kind offers, Jeff!  I'll pass on this message to Darlene and encourage her to respond.  She may have taken off the info about the PDF because, as I said, she's revising the entire thing.

I really enjoyed the website and I plan to visit some of your suggested locations when the warm weather returns. One location I have always enjoyed is in Kendal. If you take the 401 East past Bowmanville and merge onto the 115 North, then take the exit to Ganaraska Road towards the Brimacombe ski slope there is a really high hill. During the Fall the peak of the hill offers an incredible view of Kendal; you see Ganaraska road heading towards Elizabethville and there are so many colourful trees to view. On a clear day you can also see toward the West the CN Tower in the far distance.

Thanks, Phil.  I'll keep your note to remind myself.  Glad you enjoy the website.  My wife is discouraged with it right now because it's not generating any money but I keep urging her not to abandon it; it's a worthwhile project whether or not it makes money.

Perhaps a single page brochure distributed to tourist hot spots would help generate more interest in the site. The wineries in Durham region, and malls like the Oshawa Centre carry such material.

Thanks, Gigi!  We've had some enthusiastic responses from some of the people who run a few of the sites featured--including, just now, an invitation for a private tour of York's observatory so we can get some interior shots of the domes and telescopes--but as yet no offers to advertise with us.  Give it time; we need to grow.  Darlene's having a great time two floors above me working on it.  She's started a blog, too, so do feel free to share your experiences with some of these Ontario attractions, if you feel the urge!
